Selling products on Amazon is one of the fastest ways to reach a large, ready-to-buy audience in the US. Amazon draws over 150 million unique monthly visitors in the US alone — and for brands and sellers who get their setup right from day one, it can be a significant growth lever.
This guide covers everything you need to know about Amazon seller registration in the USA: eligibility, documents, the step-by-step account creation process, the 2026 verification requirements, fee structure, and what to do once your account is live.
Amazon Seller Registration in the USA: Benefits
Registering as a seller on Amazon gives you access to one of the world's largest consumer audiences from day one. You're not building traffic from scratch — Amazon brings millions of shoppers to your products every day.
Beyond reach, Amazon provides built-in tools for inventory management, order fulfillment, and customer service. The Amazon brand itself carries enormous consumer trust, which works in your favor as a seller. And diversifying into Amazon reduces your dependence on any single sales channel — a risk many direct-to-consumer brands now take seriously.
Individual vs Professional Seller Plan: Which One Should You Choose?
Before you start the registration process, you need to pick your selling plan. This is one decision most beginner guides skip over, but it directly affects your costs and what features you can access.
| Feature | Individual Plan | Professional Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | $0 | $39.99/month |
| Per-item fee | $0.99 per sale | None |
| Best for | Testing the platform, fewer than 40 sales/month | Established sellers, more than 40 sales/month |
| Bulk listing tools | ❌ Not available | ✅ Available |
| Amazon Advertising (PPC) | ❌ Not available | ✅ Available |
| Buy Box eligibility | ❌ Not eligible | ✅ Eligible |
| Restricted category access | ❌ Limited | ✅ Can apply for approval |
| A+ Content / Brand Registry | ❌ Not available | ✅ Available with Brand Registry |
If you plan to run Amazon advertising campaigns or sell more than 40 units a month, the Professional plan pays for itself quickly. Most serious sellers go Professional from day one.
Are You Eligible for Amazon Seller Registration in the USA?
To register as an Amazon seller in the USA, you must meet these eligibility requirements:
- A valid Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the IRS — either a Social Security Number (SSN) for individuals or an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for business entities
- A US bank account and valid US address
- Be at least 18 years old and have the legal capacity to enter into a binding contract
Documents Required for Amazon Seller Registration in the USA
Before starting your Amazon seller registration, gather these documents:
- Tax Identification Number (TIN): SSN for individuals or EIN for business entities.
- Bank Account Information: Your US bank account number and routing number.
- Government-Issued ID: Passport, driver's license, or national ID to verify your identity.
- Business Information: If registering as a business entity, your business registration documents and applicable licenses.
- Product Information: Details about the products you plan to sell, including images, descriptions, and pricing.
Document quality matters: Use high-quality color scans or photos showing all four corners with legible text. Amazon rejects blurry, cropped, or screenshot-based documents. All information — name, address, business name — must match exactly across every document you submit. Even a small mismatch like "Ltd." vs "Limited" can trigger a manual review and delay your approval by days.
How to Register on Amazon as a Seller
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to create your Amazon seller account:
Step 1: Go to sell.amazon.com and click Sign Up. If you already have an Amazon customer account, you can use the same email — but Amazon recommends a separate email if you prefer to keep your buying and selling accounts distinct.
Step 2: Enter your email address and create a password.
Step 3: Provide your personal or business information — legal name, business name (if applicable), address, and phone number. Amazon will use this information for account verification and payments.
Step 4: Enter your Tax Identification Number (SSN or EIN) and bank account details. This is required for Amazon to process payments to you.
Step 5: Complete identity verification by uploading your government-issued ID and proof of residential or business address dated within the last 180 days (such as a bank statement or utility bill).
Step 6: Provide information about the products you plan to sell — images, descriptions, and prices.
Step 7: Set up your fulfillment method — whether you will ship orders yourself (FBM) or use Amazon FBA to handle storage, packing, and delivery.
Step 8: Create your Amazon seller profile — your store name, logo, and seller policies that customers will see on your listings.
Step 9: Once your account is created, list your products and start selling. Review Amazon's fee structure carefully before setting your pricing.
Amazon Seller Account Verification in 2026: What to Expect
Amazon's identity verification has become significantly more thorough over the past two years. Here's what new sellers should expect in 2026 that wasn't the case a few years ago:
- Video verification call: Many new US accounts are now required to join a live video call with an Amazon associate. You'll need your original government-issued ID and proof of address ready during the call. Use a quiet, well-lit space — poor lighting or an unstable connection can cause Amazon to pause your registration.
- Facial recognition or photo ID match: Some accounts require a selfie holding your ID for automated facial recognition verification.
- Beneficial owner disclosure: If registering as a business, Amazon requires information about anyone who owns more than 25% of shares or voting rights — this is a newer compliance requirement.
- Timeline: The registration process itself can be completed in a few hours. Identity verification typically takes 1–3 business days. Total approval can take up to 5 business days if documents need manual review.
Can Non-US Residents and Indian Sellers Register on Amazon USA?
Yes — you do not need to be a US resident to register on Amazon.com and sell to US customers. Indian sellers and businesses from other countries can register on Amazon USA with the right setup.
What you will need as a non-US seller:
- US bank account or a compatible payment service: Amazon pays sellers into a US bank account. Services like Payoneer or Wise (formerly TransferWise) are commonly used by international sellers to receive Amazon payouts.
- EIN (Employer Identification Number): Non-US business entities typically obtain an EIN from the IRS to complete tax setup on Amazon. This can be applied for directly with the IRS without being a US resident.
- International credit card: Required for the account setup process — must be capable of processing international transactions.
- Valid government-issued ID: Your home country passport is accepted.
Many Indian brands successfully sell on Amazon USA without a physical US presence by using FBA — sending inventory to Amazon's US fulfillment centers, which then handles all US delivery. This is one of the most common routes for India-to-USA e-commerce expansion.
How Much Does It Cost to Sell on Amazon?
There are four main fee types sellers should know before setting prices:
- Referral Fees: Charged per sale, ranging from 6% to 45% depending on the product category.
- Fulfillment Fees: If using Amazon FBA, charged per unit based on size and weight.
- Subscription Fees: Professional plan costs $39.99/month. Individual plan is free but charges $0.99 per item sold.
- Other Fees: Long-term storage fees, return processing fees, and advertising costs if you run sponsored campaigns.
Common Amazon Seller Registration Mistakes to Avoid
Most registration delays come from a handful of avoidable errors:
- Mismatched information: Your name, address, and business name must be identical across your ID, bank details, and Seller Central form — down to spacing and abbreviations.
- Outdated documents: Amazon prefers proof of address dated within the last 90 days. Documents older than 180 days are rejected outright.
- Poor document quality: Blurry photos, cropped edges, or screenshots are rejected immediately. Use clear, full-page color scans.
- Using a personal Amazon account email: If you use the same email as your Amazon shopping account, it can create confusion during setup. Use a separate business email.
- Skipping the video call: Missing or failing the identity verification call is one of the most common reasons accounts get stuck. Schedule it as soon as prompted, and have your original documents on hand.
- Wrong fulfillment setup: Choosing FBA or FBM without understanding the cost implications for your category and product size can erode margins before your first sale.
What to Do After Your Amazon Seller Account Is Approved
Getting approved is just the starting point. Here's what to set up immediately after your account goes live:
- Complete your seller profile: Add your logo, store description, and policies. Customers see this when they visit your storefront.
- Set up tax settings: Complete the tax interview in Seller Central and configure state tax collection settings.
- Create your first listings: Focus on listing optimization from day one — title, bullet points, backend keywords, and images all affect how quickly your products appear in Amazon search.
- Enroll in Amazon Brand Registry: If you own a trademark, Brand Registry gives you access to A+ Content, Brand Analytics, and counterfeit protection tools. It's free and worth doing early.
- Configure FBA shipments: If using FBA, create your first inbound shipment plan and send inventory to Amazon's fulfillment centers before your listing goes live.
Frequently Asked Questions
What documents are required to register as an Amazon seller in the USA?
You need a government-issued photo ID (passport, driver's license, or national ID), proof of address dated within the last 180 days (bank statement or utility bill), a Tax Identification Number (SSN for individuals or EIN for businesses), US bank account details with routing and account numbers, and a valid credit card. Business entities also need their registration documents. All information must match exactly across every document you submit — even minor discrepancies trigger manual review delays.
What is the difference between Individual and Professional seller accounts on Amazon?
The Individual plan has no monthly fee but charges $0.99 per item sold and does not include access to Amazon advertising, bulk listing tools, or Buy Box eligibility. The Professional plan costs $39.99/month with no per-item fee and unlocks all selling tools including PPC advertising, bulk uploads, restricted category access, and Brand Registry eligibility. If you plan to sell more than 40 items per month or run ads, the Professional plan is more cost-effective from day one.
Can Indian sellers or non-US residents register on Amazon USA?
Yes. You do not need to be a US resident to sell on Amazon.com. Non-US sellers need a valid passport, an EIN from the IRS, a US-compatible bank account or payment service (such as Payoneer or Wise), and an international credit card. Many Indian brands sell on Amazon USA using the FBA model — shipping inventory to Amazon's US fulfillment centers — without maintaining any physical US presence.
What is Amazon Seller Central and how does it work?
Amazon Seller Central is the online dashboard where you manage your entire Amazon selling business. It's where you create and edit product listings, track orders and inventory, monitor sales performance, run advertising campaigns, manage returns, and communicate with customers. You access it at sellercentral.amazon.com after completing registration. The Professional selling plan unlocks all features within Seller Central, including bulk listing tools and advertising access.
How long does Amazon seller registration take in 2026?
The registration form itself can be completed in a few hours if you have all documents ready. Identity verification typically takes 1–3 business days. If Amazon requires a video verification call, you'll need to schedule that separately — missing the call extends your wait. If documents have any discrepancies or quality issues, manual review can add another 3–5 business days. Having all documents ready, matched, and high-quality before you start is the fastest path to approval.
What happens if my Amazon seller account is rejected during verification?
Amazon will specify the reason for rejection via email. The most common causes are mismatched information across documents, poor document quality, or an expired proof of address. Correct only the flagged issue, resubmit the specific documents requested, and do not create a second account — operating multiple Seller Central accounts from the same entity is a violation of Amazon's policies and can result in a permanent ban.
